标题: Suicide Prevention Programming for College-Aged Adults
摘要:
Global rates of suicide among adolescents and young adults continue to increase. Suicide prevention efforts that focus on strategies to reduce risk in this age group often help peers to recognize risk factors and warning signs for suicide. In this presentation, the Director of The Ohio State University (OSU) Suicide Prevention Program discusses the major components of a comprehensive campus suicide prevention program that involves the entire university in a large-scale, public health approach to suicide prevention. The program, which has been in existence for 15 years, is the largest campus suicide prevention program in the U.S.. It uses a partnership approach to help create a Campus Culture of Care where students, faculty, and staff each understand that they have a role to play in suicide prevention. Those who watch this speech can learn more about each of the evidence-based components of the OSU Suicide Prevention Program as well as what they can do to begin to implement suicide prevention programming on their campuses.

Dr. Darcy Haag Granello is a Professor of Counselor Education and Director of The Ohio State University Suicide Prevention Program. She is an Ohio Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with a Supervising Credential. She has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed national journals, has made over 300 international, national, and state presentations. Dr. Haag Granello has secured over $2.5 million in grants and funding. She is co-author of three books (Suicide: An essential guide for helping professionals and educators; Suicide, self-injury and violence in the schools; Counseling Today: Foundations of professional identity.). She has another three books on suicide, violence, and mental health in schools under contract, with the first of these (suicide in schools) due out in 2019. One of Dr. Haag Granello’s research foci is in suicide prevention, assessment, and intervention, and she has received more than $1 million in funding to develop and implement a comprehensive suicide prevention plan for the OSU campus. This is the largest campus suicide prevention program in the United States. Dr. Haag Granello is author of the Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training Program called REACH. More than 14,000 people have been through this training and become certified suicide prevention gatekeepers. The OSU Suicide Prevention Program has specialized trainings for international students (REACH Across Borders), student veterans, athletes, and other at-risk groups, and has been recognized as a model program for suicide prevention efforts on campus. Dr. Haag Granello’s second area of interest is in counselor education, specifically the cognitive development of counselors, counseling supervision, conducting outcome assessment, and attitudes towards persons with mental illness. Together with her husband and colleague, Dr. Paul Granello, she regularly conducts 3-hour and 6-hour trainings on suicide prevention, assessment, and intervention to practicing mental health professionals.
